چکیده

Hydrology does not yet possess a generally agreed upon catchment classification system. Such a classification framework should provide a mapping of landscape form and hydro-climatic conditions on catchment function (including partition, storage, and release of water), while explicitly accounting for uncertainty and for variability at multiple temporal and spatial scales. This framework would provide an organizing principle, create a common language, guide modeling and measurement efforts, and provide constraints on predictions in ungauged basins, as well as on estimates of environmental change impacts. In this article, we (i) review existing approaches to define hydrologic similarity and to catchment classification; (ii) discuss outstanding components or characteristics that should be included in a classification scheme; and (iii) provide a basic framework for catchment classification as a starting point for further analysis. Possible metrics to describe form, hydro-climate, and function are suggested and discussed. We close the discussion with a list of requirements for the classification framework and open questions that require addressing in order to fully implement it. Open questions include: How can we best represent characteristics of form and hydro-climatic conditions? How does this representation change with spatial and temporal scale? What functions (partition, storage, and release) are relevant at what spatial and temporal scale? At what scale do internal structure and heterogeneity become important and need to be considered?

One of the challenges for hydrologists is finding a new method for hydrologic classification of catchments. An appropriate classification method can be effective in many branches of hydrologic science like modeling. To deal with the complexity and nonlinearity of hydrologic processes, some researchers have proposed using the chaos theory for catchment classification. In this research, possibili...

Catchment classification: hydrological analysis of catchment behavior through process-based modeling along a climate gradient

Catchment classification is an efficient method to synthesize our understanding of how climate variability and catchment characteristics interact to define hydrological response. One way to accomplish catchment classification is to empirically relate climate and catchment characteristics to hydrologic behavior and to quantify the skill of predicting hydrologic response based on the combination ...

Development and application of a catchment similarity index for subsurface flow

[1] In this study, we develop a similarity parameter to describe shallow subsurface hydrological response of small catchments on the basis of the hillslope‐Péclet number. This new similarity parameter, named the catchment‐Péclet (caPe) number, provides a theoretical framework to compare the relative hydrologic response derived from shallow subsurface flow of small catchments on the basis of geo...

Diagnostic calibration and cross-catchment transferability of a simple process-consistent hydrologic model

The transferability of hydrologic models is of ever increasing importance for making improved hydrologic predictions and testing hypothesized hydrologic drivers. Here, we present an investigation into the variability and transferability of the recently introduced catchment connectivity model (Smith et al., 2013). The catchment connectivity model was developed following extensive experimental ob...

Identifying streamgage networks for maximizing the effectiveness of regional water balance modeling

[1] One approach to regional water balance modeling is to constrain rainfall-runoff models with a synthetic regionalized hydrologic response. For example, the Large Basin Runoff Model (LBRM), a cornerstone of hydrologic forecasting in the Laurentian Great Lakes basin, was calibrated to a synthetic discharge record resulting from a drainage area ratio method (ARM) for extrapolating beyond gaged ...
